19th February 2007A nationwide call has been made for volunteers to assist with the matchmaking of city and farming families for the first-ever national Farm Day in May.
Farm Day was founded by Deb Bain, a Victorian farmer who took it upon herself to do something the bridge the city country divide.
The result was an amazing success, with dozens of Melbourne families travelling to rural Victoria last year to find out how farmers lived.
So successful was the initial event, that Ms Bain has won the backing needed to take the concept to a national audience.
“We’re looking for people from all corners of the country who are enthusiastic and discerning and who have an interest in helping bridge the country-city divide,” Ms Bain.
“Practically, it involves plenty of telephone time, speaking with the families who register and recording their interest on a database.”
Ms Bain sees the matchmakers as the lynch-pin to the success of Farm Day.
“With appropriate matching of families we will be generating relationships that will hopefully blossom into friendships for years to come,” she said.
“Farm Day was established with the intent of fostering ‘fun, friendship and understanding’ between city and farming families.
“A careful match will help ensure this becomes a reality.”
