VALE JOHN PURCELL
Property Rights Australia members it is with great sadness that I bring you the news of the passing of a founding member and later Chairman for some time of PRA – John Purcell OAM.
The Funeral for John Purcell will be on Friday 11th December 2015 at 3pm at St Paul‘s Cathedral which is located at 89 William St in the centre of Rockhampton.
John Purcell was a giant in agripolitics as prior to PRA starting in 2003 he was an inaugural member of the Cattlemen’s’ Union and served twice as its Chairman. He also served as a member of the Cattle Council & as a member of the Qld Meat and Livestock Authority.
John Purcell never forgot whom he was representing and he never saw the positions he held as ones of entitlement. His community service saw him stand up strongly for those disadvantaged.
John rallied against injustices and when he saw people being damaged he fought tooth and nail to resolve the situation. He went with the facts, listening to legal and scientific advice and then was prepared to cross artificial entrenched positions, ignoring criticism to bring about lasting agreement.
He organised and was a commanding figure managing protest rallies attended by large numbers of agricultural producers. It was John Purcell that was instrumental in building a fighting fund war chest for PRA which subsequently was used to win 12 court cases out of the 13 times that PRA took up the cause of farming families unjustly treated under the draconian Beattie Vegetation Management Act.
John will be remembered by the many people from all walks of life who knew John was on their side.
John Purcell came up with the motto for PRA – STAND YOUR GROUND.
