24th January 2007Woolworths’ National Drought Action Day yesterday has drawn praise from the grocery buying public.
The nation-wide supermarket chain pledged to donate the entire day’s profit to drought assistance for farming families and research into sustainable farming practices.
While the exact figure will be known by 3pm today, Woolies estimated that about $3 million would be raised.
The move was seen by some farming groups as a token goodwill gesture to attempt to repair the perceived bad relations between farmers and the grocery chain.
The South Australian Farmers Association, for instance, says better year-round prices for growers would be more helpful.
In both rural and urban centres, shoppers who saved their weekly grocery runs until yesterday, saw it as a welcome move to assist the farming community.
